Home Assistant is one of the best things in the smart home world. It is open source, it integrates with almost everything, and its community is enormous and genuinely helpful. Nexop natively supports the same kinds of integrations Home Assistant does, and we have learned a great deal from how it works.
It also asks something of you. Automations are rules you write. Context is something you encode. Getting a polished result is a project, and for a lot of households that project never quite finishes.
Nexop is not trying to replace Home Assistant for people who love it. It is for the people who bounced off it.

Where Home Assistant is the better choice
- It is free. For a capable, patient user, that is very hard to argue with.
- The integration library is vastly larger than any commercial hub, and if something is missing, you can write it yourself.
- Open source means no vendor can take it away, change the terms, or shut it down.
- There is no ceiling. If you can describe the automation, you can eventually build it.
- A large, active community means most problems you hit have already been solved by someone.
- If you genuinely enjoy tinkering, Nexop will feel constraining and Home Assistant will not.
Where Nexop aims to be the better choice
- Zigbee, KNX, Matter, and WiFi are supported natively, without adding dongles to reach common protocols.
- It observes for a week and then proposes automations, instead of asking you to anticipate them.
- You talk to it in plain English rather than editing configuration.
- The intended outcome is a household where nobody but you has to know what a hub is.
The bottom line
If you enjoy the building, use Home Assistant. It is free, it is excellent, and you will hit its limits long after you hit ours.
If you have tried it and quietly stopped maintaining it, or you want the result without the project, that is who Nexop is for.
