SmartThings is one of the most capable free smart home platforms there is. It supports almost every protocol that matters — Matter, Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi — and by 2026 Samsung has quietly made the app genuinely good.
Two things define it. It is tied to a Samsung account — Samsung’s own site says every device must be "registered with a single Samsung Account" — and most of what it does runs in Samsung’s cloud. SmartThings Edge has moved some Zigbee, Z-Wave and LAN control on-device, but routines and history still largely pass through Samsung’s servers.
That is a fair trade for a free platform. It is the wrong trade if you want your home to keep working offline and your routines to stay in the house.

Where SmartThings is the better choice
- It is free, and for a free platform it is remarkably broad.
- Protocol coverage is excellent — Matter, Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave and Wi-Fi, including Z-Wave and Thread that Nexop will not have at launch.
- If you own recent Samsung TVs or appliances, some can act as the hub, and the ecosystem integrates tightly.
- A huge installed base means broad device compatibility, and manufacturers support it early.
- The 2026 app is genuinely one of the better smart home apps to live with.
- If a Samsung account and cloud processing do not bother you, it is very hard to beat on value.
Where Nexop aims to be the better choice
- Your home keeps working when the internet — or Samsung’s cloud — does not, because automations run locally.
- No Samsung account, or any account, is required for your lights to turn on.
- Occupancy, routines and history stay in the house rather than becoming records on a corporate server.
- It proposes automations from what it observes, instead of asking you to build routines.
- KNX is supported natively, which SmartThings does not do, for European and professionally wired homes.
The bottom line
If you want a free, broad platform, already live in Samsung’s ecosystem, and cloud processing is not a concern, SmartThings is an excellent choice and a genuinely good app.
Nexop is for people who want the intelligence to live in their house, keep working offline, and not require an account — with automations proposed rather than built.
